About Us
P R Bones & Son was established in 1954 and has been based at Buddles Farm since 1963. The farm is located between Broadstairs and Margate on the Isle of Thanet.
P R Bones & Son has been a family-run farm for three generations with the fourth generation already taking an active role.
Originally the farm grew a variety of vegetables, top fruit and kept 13,000 hens for egg production.
Over the decades, the farm has become more specialised to concentrate on and perfect growing cauliflower, Romanesque, and niche new varieties of cauliflower.
The farm also grows spring wheat and field beans for seed contracts and also pumpkins for halloween.
The soil
Thanet boasts some of the best soil in Britain for growing and producing vegetables. P R Bones & Son is fortunate to have both grade 1 and grade 2 soil types on the farm. The soil sits on a chalk bedrock which makes for a free draining, lime rich, loamy soil, perfect for cauliflower.
Surrounded by the coast on three sides, the farm benefits from a maritime climate. Although unpredictable, it is generally warmer than inland areas during the winter, therefore less impacted by damage from the frost. During, the six week cauliflower planting season in the summer, the temperature is cooler than inland which means there are fewer plant losses due to drought.
